Christantus Uche Ignites Dominant Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden European adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Without key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a commanding result that virtually guarantees them a spot in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another three points in their upcoming match against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to seal direct passage to the last 16, especially following a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Opportunity
This match provided a platform for several Palace's fringe talent to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning after joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, finding the net for the second consecutive succession.
A Shelbourne team that had finished their domestic season were no match even for a mostly second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were already depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg problems.
Dominance Established from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee waved away the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw several players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then blazed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still room for development in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the visiting side.
