A recent study indicates that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People using such drugs must be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the way of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
People who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a switch activating and you become ravenous," said an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
