Space Traveler Discloses Depression After ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the period after the journey.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was buried under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.

She concluded that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the flight, such as spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

Flight Details

The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the edge of space.

The team of pioneers also included accomplished professionals from various fields.

The venture behind the mission is a private space firm founded by a well-known tech mogul.
