In the course of a comprehensive professional conversation before the initial launch of Primal, animator Genndy Tartakovsky shared a singular ambition: "I want to be the best." He aimed for his series to resonate with large audiences, keep them guessing with every story beat, and make it splashy every single time.
It's perhaps predictable that, following a lengthy break, Primal has returned looking like a completely transformed series that still remains faithful to the core of the director's foundational savage aesthetic. He consistently takes risks.
"This isn't a restart," Tartakovsky stated before his scheduled appearance. "This represents an ongoing story of the narrative."
Nevertheless, the promotional video for Primal the third season veers in a new direction from the story's prior endpoint. The previous installment wrapped up with the demise of the protagonist, Spear, and a flash-forward reveal that Mira had a daughter — one who obviously gained her father’s ferocity. But none of that narrative thread is shown in the preview. Conversely, the creator presents something considerably stranger: a undead protagonist.
This teaser dives headfirst into surreal storytelling and, if you will, primal terror. We see an undead Spear battling skeletal fighters with toothy helmets, engaging a crimson-covered beast, and sprinting from a enormous worm-like being. Near the conclusion, he is shown experiencing a spirit journey in the desert, where he comes face-to-face with a colossal fly? Amidst a quick view of slithering beings chewing on dead bodies and The undead hero pummeling a feline predator, each shot oozes brutal combat and surreal fear.
For fans wondering the fate of Mira and her daughter — who appeared ready to carry the series forward — Tartakovsky says not to worry, but maybe let go of that possibility too. "Don’t cling to [the scene] too tight," he commented, explaining, "yet all events are factual. Everything makes sense. I’m not rewriting history."
Before settling upon the direction for season 3, the creator had already intended to redefine the show. "I thought I would do an anthology," he revealed. "Primal is the title, and then here’s a new subheading. I began creating fresh concepts… yet they didn't resonate." He had considered a genesis narrative — something otherworldly, yet drawing from biblical origins — but he could never draw it into existence. Furthermore, the connection everyone shared with the hero continued to gnaw at him. Then… "Suddenly, this inspiration struck [...] and I immediately outlined multiple chapters."
An zombified protagonist came naturally from the essential world of the show. Tartakovsky felt that the first season installment "Epidemic of Insanity," which involved a zombie dinosaur, gave him creative permission to reintroduce his stone-age fighter. "This happens in this world," he said, careful not to spoil how it’ll all resolve in the season 3 premiere.
Within the entertainment industry where cartoon series can get canceled abruptly, Primal’s comeback was never guaranteed. The creator acknowledges his established partnerships for enabling the program's persistence periods of instability. "Continuing the series is straightforward — it’s just finding the money, which is increasingly challenging today," he states. He knows the struggle well. As he unveils the first glimpse at Primal season 3, he’s also fighting an uphill battle to realize his long-planned project Black Knight created elsewhere. In recent days, he’s resorted to sharing footage of preliminary visuals just to gain attention. To some extent, Primal returning for another season — and going this hard — seems like a wonder.
Although the destiny of the network and its programming stays uncertain — particularly following latest organizational changes and a likely takeover — the creator appears satisfied to disregard the distractions. That’s how you "be the best" in the end.
"I'm completely immersed in creation. That's handled at higher levels," he explained. "I produce artistic works, and so whatever management is in place, if they appreciate my output, that's what I need to focus on."
According to the trailer, Primal season 3 debuts in January 2026.
