Woman Sentenced to Two Decades in Incarceration for Role in Fatal Attack on Aussie Surfers and American Citizen in Mexico

A Mexican judicial body has imposed a 20-year incarceration term on a woman for her involvement in the spring 2024 killings of two Australian surfing enthusiasts and an American man at a popular surfing spot in Baja California, as confirmed by legal officials.

Deceased Individuals Identified

The victims were Australian brothers Callum and Jake Robinson, aged 30 and 33 in that order, along with Jack Carter Rhoad, a 30-year-old US citizen.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The three men had been camping in a remote beachside area when they were murdered in what investigators suspect was an effort to take their pickup truck.

A Mexican judge in Ensenada sentenced Ary Gisell Silva, 23, who admitted during the trial that she had instigated and taken part in the robbery of the visitors’ possessions, which subsequently led to the killing of the surfing trio.

“They have high-end devices and quality tires” on their vehicle, the young woman allegedly told her three accomplices before they committed the crime, according to evidence gathered in the investigative inquiry.

Legal Outcome

Silva was found culpable of offenses associated with “violent robbery”, according to the decision published in the official documents of the legal body of the state.

Based on testimony presented by the state, the accused was the first to interact with the foreigners and noticed they had valuables. That led her to encourage her boyfriend and the other two men to commit the robbery.

Additional Accused

The remaining suspects have since been detained and charged with homicide, but they are being tried in distinct proceedings.

Timeline of Incidents

The surfers were declared missing on April 27, 2024 while staying in Ensenada, where they had journeyed from the US to ride waves.

Based on the prosecution, the assailants “deliberately surprised the surfers and fired at them with guns, taking their lives on Sunday, April 28.”

The crime caused great indignation and grief in their home countries, where an widespread search campaign was initiated in the news and on social networks.

The remains were found on 3 May 2024, hidden in a rocky area.

Past Cases

Other international visitors visiting the Pacific coast of Mexico region had already been victims of violent acts.

In November 2015, another pair of Australian surfers, Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman, were murdered and their remains later set on fire while driving through the region of Sinaloa state.
